Lebanese Ministry of Information
In a recent interview on LBCI’s “Naharkom Saiid”, Caretaker Information Minister, Ziad Makary, expressed his view that “Lebanon is not a priority for the West, but rather the focus remains on the situation between Israel and Palestine.”
Makary highlighted the significance of the French initiative, which he stated is linked to Resolution 1701 and aims to establish a new agreement to restore stability along Lebanon’s southern borders. He emphasized that the initiative is based on key points related to disputed and occupied territories, as well as the security and military situation in the region.
Regarding the implementation of Resolution 1701, Makary noted the importance of a comprehensive approach, cautioning against prioritizing the interests of Israel alone. He stressed the need for a balanced approach that considers the broader implications for regional stability.
Shifting focus to Lebanon’s presidential file, Makary dismissed speculations about the withdrawal of Sleiman Frangieh, head of the Marada Movement, emphasizing that the decision lies with Frangieh himself. He called for dialogue and urged all parties to agree on a candidate for the presidency.
On the issue of Syrian displacement, the Information Minister expressed concern over the growing crisis and called for concerted efforts to address the challenges. He highlighted Cyprus’s response to the influx of Syrian refugees and emphasized the importance of returning displaced individuals to their homeland.
Regarding Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s stance on aid directed towards the displaced, Makary stated that Mikati has refused assistance “if it is intended solely for the benefit of refugees.”
Makary underscored the need for a comprehensive approach, involving the judiciary, municipalities, security forces, and the state, to enforce Lebanese law and seek internal and political solutions to the complex challenges facing the country.
