Minister of Information, Manal Abdel Samad Najd, on Wednesday said during the first consultative session at the Grand Serail titled “The present and future of media” that work was underway to set the required guidelines for local media, to be followed by proposals for the sector’s legal structure.
“There are points of strength that favor the advancement of the media sector, especially that Lebanon is known for its media freedom, which distinguishes it and makes it a beacon of freedom in the east,” the Minister said.
She pointed out that media institutions were enduring tough times. “If things carry on in this manner, media institutions are doomed to suffer closures; thus, it is extremely necessary to discuss their fate and role.”
Abdel Samad went on to underline a number of media flaws, most important of which is lack of reliability in disseminating information and fake news “that may be intended for financial and economic gains.”
The Information Minister did not fail to shed light on the paramount importance of journalist safety, especially in light of the most recent scenes of violence against a number of journalists.
